How to Resize Partition in Ubuntu

Linux system administrators need to occasionally increase or decrease the size of disk partitions. It is also known as resizing of partitions. In this article, we will learn how to resize Ubuntu partitions.

How to Resize Partition in Ubuntu

There are several third party tools to easily resize disk partitions in Ubuntu. We will use GParted partition editor which comes by default in Ubuntu CD. It provides a graphical interface to manage disk partitions. Before you proceed, please take a backup of all important files and directories in your system so that you can easily recover them in case something goes wrong.

1. Boot From GParted or Ubuntu CD

Restart your system using Ubuntu installation on CD/USB or even using GParted disk. You can download Ubuntu bootable ISO from here.

2. Open GParted

Open GParted from Ubuntu’s Dash.

3. Resize Partition

You will see the following window that lists all partitions.

You can resize a partition only when it is not in use. If a partition is in use, right click on it and select Unmount option to unmount it. If it is a swap partition, select Swap off.

Right Click the partition you want to resize and click ‘resize/move’ from dropdown menu.

You will see the following window that allows you to specify the partition details in textboxes. You can also drag the bar handles to resize partition.

Please note, your changes will be enqueued in GParted and not executed immediately.

4. Create New Partition

If there is free space on your disk that does not belong to any partition, then you can use it to create a new partition. Right click the space and click New from dropdown menu. GParted will start the wizard for new partition.

5. Apply Changes

Click the green tick mark to apply changes. This will take some time and do not switch of your system or cancel the changed midway. If there are any errors or conflicts, you will see an error message.

6. Restart System

Lastly, restart system without any CD or USB to apply changes.
